Why Grenadine?
One aspect we liked when choosing Grenadine’s name was that there are some islands in the Caribbean with the same name. There is an individual island called Grenada (wiki tourism map) and it is near a collection of over 600 islands referred to as the Grenadines (wiki tourism map).
Heidi and I have never been to the Grenadines (or the Caribbean for that matter) but we were a fan of the island connection that the name has.
The original idea for the name actually came to Heidi when passing by a restaurant in Montreal with the same name. That’s when the wheels were set in motion. As a side note, Saffron is also a restaurant in Montreal…
An ancient fruit, the pomegranate derived its English name from the French name which is le grenade. Heidi loves pomegranates so this meaning was an added welcome to the name Grenadine and it ties in with some French language history too, which is great.
BTW – the hand grenade got its name from its shrapnel looking like pomegranate seeds (according to wikipedia, anyways). Seems to me that a hand grenade also looks a lot like a pomegranate before it’s blown up.
This last reference is a funny little tag along. Grenadine syrup is probably the reference that most people are aware of. It is a syrup that was historically made from pomegranate juice mixed with cherry juice and sugar but has since become basically high fructose corn syrup. It is added to many popular drinks such as the Shirley Temple, Tequila Sunrise, pink lemonade, and others.
We don’t really care that much about this meaning but we’re glad it’s coming along for the ride!
Aloha for a middle name was a great fit for us and especially for Heidi who embodies the Aloha Spirit. As almost everyone knows, it’s a way of saying hello and also goodbye in Hawaiian but it means even more than that. It has a lot of meanings that are actually very similar to the Hebrew word Shalom like completeness, peace, love and compassion.
We both liked the meaning of the word and how it rolled together with her whole name. Hope you enjoyed the writeup and got to learn something new!
